CAIRO – 3 June 2021: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Thursday ordered making the paper exam system available for the Thanaweya Amma (Grade 12) students simultaneously along with the new digital exam system on tablets during their final exams.

The Thanaweya Amma in Egypt currently includes only the last stage of the secondary education. It is the educational system for public secondary schools that its final exams serve as an entrance for universities.

This year, the Thanaweya Amma exams are set to be conducted in July.

Sisi’s decision to make the two systems available as alternatives came in a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Minister of Education Tarek Shawki and Minister of Communications Amr Talaat.

The president ordered facilitating the procedures for the Thanaweya Amma students in light of its new system to ensure they perform the exams smoothly and easily, Presidential spokesman Bassam Radi said.

The meeting reviewed the latest preparations for the Thanaweya Amma exams of the educational year 2020/2021 under the new system.

The meeting also reviewed the joint efforts made in cooperation between the education and communications ministries within the framework of the new system that includes around 2,500 schools nationwide.

Also, the meeting reviewed the outcome of the experimental exams conducted so far in preparation for the main Thanaweya Amma exams scheduled for July.

Last September, Shawki announced abolishing the decades-old system of Thanaweya Amma as of the end of the 2019/2020 academic year.

He announced replacing the high school final exams by a new electronic module as of the 2020-2021 school year.

He said the exams will be taken and evaluated electronically and will be based on multiple-choice questions. He noted that the students will be able to know their results right after finishing their exams.

While Egypt over the past few years has adopted an online examination system via tablets, yet several technical issues used to take place.
