CAIRO – 7 July 2017: Egyptian businessman Ahmed Ezz, convicted of embezzlement, was bailed out on Thursday after resorting to reconciliation with the state in the steel licensing lawsuit.

Ezz paid a bail of LE 250,000 ($13,889), according to Al-Ahram newspaper. Defending himself before the public prosecution Ezz stated, “I will reconcile with Egypt, and will be buried here.”

Using an integrity based approached his lawyer, Hazem Abdel Ghaffar, said that the reconciliation procedures are geared to respect the rights of those in conflict with the court. He added that his client’s decision stemmed from his attachment and loyalty to his country.

Abdel Ghafar stated to the press that the reconciliation procedures were initiated two months ago, but Ezz rejected the idea of private reconciliation because he saw himself as innocent. Later Ezz decided to “make peace” for the sake of the “motherland” and reconcile.

Ezz is a steel tycoon and former member of the now dissolved Democratic National Part (DNP) under former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

In the aftermath of the January 25 Revolution he was arrested over corruption lawsuits regarding iron licenses, the misuse of public funds totally LE 660 million ($36.9 million).

The steel tycoon has been put on a travel ban list until the continuation of his case before the National Committee on September 6.
