Egypt, Russia discuss Qatari crisis

CAIRO - 6 July 2017: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held Thursday a phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov during which they discussed the latest developments of the Qatari crisis.

Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said Shoukry briefed Lavrov on the outcome of the quartet meeting that was held on Wednesday in Cairo in which the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Bahrain reiterated their countries' insistence on their stance that rejects the Qatari support of terrorism and extremism.

The contact also dealt with the demands introduced to Doha by the four Arab states in this regard.

Shoukry underlined the importance that the international community would intensify its efforts aiming at fighting terrorism and tightening the grip on those financing terrorist groups.

Lavrov reiterated his country’s commitment to backing all efforts aiming at uprooting terrorism and preserving the Arab countries' stability and security.

The meeting also touched on the latest developments of the Syrian crisis as regards Geneva talks.

The two ministers agreed on holding a meeting in Cairo or Moscow soon on the Syrian crisis.
