Mubarak’s Finance Minister Boutros Ghai acquitted of corruption charges

CAIRO – 26 April 2021: Mubarak’s era former Finance Minister Youssef Boutros Ghali was acquitted of charges of squandering public funds in a case dubbed in media as “cooking gas coupons,” on Monday.

 

Boutros Ghali, whose uncle Boutros Boutros Ghali was U.N. secretary-general from 1992 to 1996, served as finance minister under deposed President Hosni Mubarak. After overthrowing Mubarak in 2011, Ghali was accused of squandering LE 20 million of public funds in a transaction involving coupons used for the distribution of subsidized cooking gas.  

 

He had been changed with providing a British company a contract for the coupons by direct order, not a tender. On April 23, 2013, Ghali was sentenced in absentia to 25 years in prison.
