Tunisian President Kais Saeid (L) received by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi (R) during his visit to Cairo
CAIRO – 10 April 2021: Tunisian President Kais Saeid visit to Cairo is part of establishing “bridges of communication and consultations” with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, as well as creating “new visions of cooperation,” Tunisia’s minister of foreign affairs told the Middle East News Agency (MENA).
Saeid arrived Friday where he visited cultural landmarks in Cairo, and met with Sisi on Saturday.
Tunisian Foreign Minister Othman Jerandi said regular phone calls between the two leaders were the basis for “a relaunch of relations to wider horizons.”
Late Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi in 2019 visited Egypt to attend the Arab-European summit, and Sisi visited Tunisia the same year to attend the Arab League Summit. Ministerial visits were exchanged during that period before the outbreak of Covid.
The situation in Libya, which has borders with both countries, is one of the main issues at the table of discussions. Egypt and Tunisia agree on a Libyan-Libyan dialogue without the interference of foreign powers to maintain stability in the country, the minister said.
Jerandi added that Tunisia wants to see progress in negotiations between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt regarding the Renaissance Dam to serve development and stability in the area. He said Tunisia support the mediation of the African Union as well as other international parties to reach a diplomatic solution.
