CAIRO – 3 April 2021: Egypt voices full support to Jordan and the Jordanian king in preserving the security and stability of the kingdom, Presidential spokesman Bassam Radi said in a statement on Saturday, after Jordan arrested at high-profile figures for “security reasons”.
The kingdom has reportedly arrested around 20 people, including Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, a member of the royal family, and former finance minister Bassem Awadallah.
This comes after reports of a plot to unseat King Abdullah II.
“Egypt affirms that the security and stability of the sisterly Jordan is an inseparable part of the Egyptian and Arab national security,” the Egyptian presidential statement read.
“May God protect the kingdom from any harm,” the statement added.
Jordanian Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Yousef Huneiti said investigations are conducted in this regard, affirming that their results will be announced with fill transparency and clarity, Jordan’s news agency Petra reported.
Huneiti said the procedures that have been taken are all in line with the legal framework and were only taken after investigations.
Huneiti affirmed that no one is above the law and that the security and stability of Jordan come first.
He also denied reports that former Jordanian Crown Prince Hamzah bin Hussein has been placed under house arrest.
Huneiti, however, said he asked Prince Hamzah to stop movements and activities that are employed to target the security and stability of Jordan.
