Qaradawi’s self contradiction viewed

CAIRO – 4 July 2017: Reposted by some social media fans, Yusuf al-Qaradawi's 2012 tweet and message emphasized that to be internationally supported is not permissible in Islam, in contradiction to the fact he is currently harbored by the Turkish and Iranian forces in Qatar.

On November 28, 2012, Qaradawi said on his Twitter personal account “for honorable citizens to be internationally supported and to rely on them to solve your country’s interior affairs are not permissible in Islam. This is considered a major betrayal for Allah and for the right of your country.”

Social media people, who were silent after Qatar used some defense forces and soldiers from Turkey, noted Qaradawi’s self-contradiction.

Qaradawi is a controversial figure in the Arab world, and is accused by many of his opponents of spreading hate and intolerance through his fatwas (religious edicts).

Earlier on Sunday, the State Security Prosecution ordered the detention of the daughter of Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi and her husband, Hossam Khalaf, a leading member in the Wassat Party for 15 days, pending investigations into joining an illegal group.

Arab and Gulf countries, mainly Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain, severed their ties with Qatar over accusations of supporting terrorist groups.

The four countries also sent Doha a list of 13 demands which must be met in order to end the standoff.

They also labeled 59 individuals, including Qaradawi, and 12 organizations with ties with Qatar, as “terrorists” and closed their airspace and maritime navigation for Qatari vessels early June.

Qaradawi escaped after being arrested in January 1954 and then in November of the same year during the rule of President Gamal Abdel-Nasser, Al-Arabya reported in an article published in June 2017. He has been living in Qatar since 1961, serving as the Director of the Secondary Religious Institute.

After obtaining Qatari citizenship, Qaradawi founded the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) in Qatar in 2004. It was not before long that the underlying intention of establishing the IUMS became clear. The IUMS was founded in a bid to take over the role of Al-Azhar mosque, as a beacon of moderate Islam worldwide.
In 2016, a video interview showed Qaradawi a leading figure of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, articulating his permission of suicide bombing, if required, as a necessary tactic by a wider group and not by an individual.

In October 2004, Qaradawi was mentioned among ”the sheikhs of death” as over 2,500 Muslim intellectuals from 23 countries signed a petition addressed to the UN to raise awareness on the use of religion for violence incitement. Qaradawi was accused of “providing a religious cover for terrorism”.
