CAIRO-6 November 2020: Liverpool Egyptian winger, Mohamed Salah, scored a goal in his team’s 5-0 victory over Italian side, Atalanta in the third round of the UEFA Champions League competition.

This goal allowed Salah to share the record of Liverpool’s top scorer in the UEFA Champions League with the club legend, Steven Gerrad.

“I was very proud last night to see Mo Salah equal my scoring record for Liverpool in Europe, it was only a matter of time. Records are there to be broken, of course, they are,” Gerrard said.

Salah scored 21 goals in 36 appearances while Gerrad reached the same number of goals in 73 appearances with the Reds.

Liverpool former captain added “I honestly think he’ll go on and embarrass my record — and I hope that he does. That kind of thing is always there for strikers.”

Gerrard led Liverpool to clinch the Champions League title in 2005 in Istanbul and 14 years later Salah led the club to the title in Madrid.

Salah commented on his achievement, saying “Of course I’m very happy to be the highest one. Steven Gerrard is a legend for the club. It’s something I’m very proud of.”

After being knocked out of the Competition’s round of 16 last season, Salah and his teammates aim to secure the title this season for the 7th time in the club’s history.
