CAIRO-8 August 2020: Manchester City defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg to win the tie 4-2 on aggregate and secure their place in the competition's quarter-finals.

A fully merited victory for the English giants as they achieved their first ever victory over the record 13-time winners Real Madrid at home.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane produced two huge mistakes to allow Raheem Sterling and then Gabriel Jesus to score the home team's two goals, while Karim Benzema scored Real Madrid's only goal in the game.

"We more than deserve to be in the next stage. We're here to try and win the Champions League." Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said after the game.

Manchester City will face Lyon in a one-off quarter-final tie on 15 August after the French team survived a comeback from Juventus.

Guardiola added "To win the Champions League you have to beat a lot of teams. There are still Bayern Munich, Lyon, Barcelona, Napoli, Atletico Madrid - so many good teams."
