CAIRO – 6 March 2020: Zamalek have a golden chance to reach the CAF Champions League semi-finals when they face the defending champions, Esperance, in front of more than 60k Tunisian fans at Rades stadium.

Zamalek secured first-leg advantage with a 3-1 win in Cairo thanks to goals from Mohamed Ounajem, Achraf Bencherki and Mahmoud Alaa.

“We have much respect for Esperance but we came here to get a ticket for the semi-finals. They have a great team with many experienced players and a very good manager.” Carteron said during the pre-game press conference.

CAF announced heavy sanctions on the Tunisian side following the players and coach’s behavior against the match referee, Redouane Jiyed.

CAF suspended four Esperance players, Khalil Chamam and Abderaouf Benguit as well as the head coach, Mouine Chaabani, and the team assistant coach, Mejdi Traoui.

Esperance will also miss their defender, Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, who received a red card during the game.

carteron added “They will not be affected by the sanctions. They are playing under more pressure and we need to produce a better performance to advance in the competition.”

The game starts on 21:00.
