CAIRO – 5 March 2020: Amr El Ganainy, the president of the Egyptian Football Association, announced on Thursday that the Video assistant referees (VAR) will be deployed in the Egyptian League.

The game between Enppi and El Geish at Egyptian League Matchweek 18 will be the first game to use VAR as Egyptian referee, Mohamed El Sabahy, will be the VAR referee for the game.

“I am so proud that we fulfilled our promise regarding VAR implementation in the league. This is a massive achievement.” El Ganainy said during the press conference.

VAR technology was used at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia and since then it was implemented at the top leagues in the world.

VAR role is to help the referee to check incidents in the four match-changing situations.

EFA President added “13 accredited companies have applied to obtain the rights to implement the technology. In December, we reached an agreement with Media Pro to take over the task.”
