CAIRO – 10 June 2017: For the first time in 17 years, Newcastle United will not be represented by a member of the Ameobi family.

According to Skysports, Newcastle United released 25-year-old winger Sammy Ameobi on June 9 after his contract with the club ended.

The three Ameobi brothers - Sammy, Shola and Tomi - represented the club from 2000 through Friday. Shola, Newcastle’s former striker, was the first player from the Ameobi’s family to represent Newcastle in the senior level from 2000 until 2014. Tomi, Newcastle’s attacking player, was the second player from the family to play for Newcastle in the youth level, from 2003-2005. Finally came attacking winger Shola, who played from 2010 to 2017 at Newcastle.

The three players played exclusively for Newcastle because they lived near the club.

After winning the Championship last season, Newcastle will be entering the Premier League next season hoping for a mid-table position. They are looking for quality young players and have recently managed to sign Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu on a 4-year permanent deal.
