CAIRO – 1 December 2017: The World Cup draw put Egypt in Group A, alongside Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and the host nation, Russia.

Egypt plays their first game in the group stage against the South American team, Uruguay on Friday June 19 at 02:00 p.m. (Cairo Local Time).

Uruguay had 12 appearances in the World Cup tournaments between 1930 and 2014; they had two World Cup titles in 1930, beating host Argentina 4-2, and in 1950 defeating host Brazil 2-1.They also had five appearances in the semi-finals.

The Uruguayan team won Copa America 15 times, recently winning it in 2011; becoming the South American team most crowned as champion.

Oscar Washington Tabarez is an institution in Uruguayan football. He coached the national team in Italy in 1990, South Africa in 2010 and Brazil in 2014.

Uruguay, known as La Celeste, qualified for the 2018 World Cup in the second place in its group after beating Bolivia in the last game 4-2 on October 11, 2017.

Egypt once faced Uruguay in a friendly match in 2006 in Alexandria stadium which ended with a 2-0 score to Uruguay.

Uruguay has a deadly attacking line including Barcelona`s star Luis Suarez and Paris Saint-Germain`s striker Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan team captain is Diego Godin, Atletico Madrid`s defender, who is ranked the 21st in the FIFA national teams’ ranking.
