CAIRO – 20 November 2017: Barcelona’s Belgian defender, Thomas Vermaelen, is expected to play his first minutes with Barcelona this season against Valencia on Sunday at La Liga, the Spanish League.

Barcelona’s manager, Ernesto Valverde, is forced to start the game with Vermaelen in defense alongside Barcelona’s French defender, Samuel Umtiti.

Vermaelen is Valverde’s fourth choice for a defender after Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano and Umtiti.

Barcelona misses Mascherano due to an injury and Gerard Pique due to suspension after he got his fifth yellow card against Leganes on Saturday.

Vermaelen has an irreplaceable chance to prove himself as a world class defender and fight for a place in Barcelona’s defense line for the rest of the season, to be able to participate with the Belgium national team in the World Cup in Russia.

Vermaelen joined Barcelona in 2014 from Arsenal but he could not earn a place in Barcelona’s starting line-up. He played only 10 games with Barcelona in the duration of two years before joining Roma on a one year loan.
