CAIRO – 19 November 2017: Family pressure leaves Emmanuel Adebayor considering suicide. Adebayor, a Togolese striker playing for the Turkish Istanbul Basaksehir football club, stated that he has repeatedly considered committing suicide as a result of what he describes as unbearable family pressure.

Adebayor expressed his sadness, claiming that his family pressured him “for years” until he had to stop talking to them. He further stated that he is “very upset that events came to that extent.”

According to the Togolese striker, his family was only interested in his money: “It is really shocking to work hard to get your family out ahead and see how they oppose you. I have always told my younger brothers that we have been manipulated by our families.”

“I wanted to kill myself so many times,” says Adebayor. “My family calls me, but not to ask me how I am, only to demand money.”

“When I played at Tottenham and suffered a tendon injury, they called me while I was doing some tests, but it was not to ask me how I was doing, but to ask me for money for a child's school fees," recalled Adebayor.

A former striker of Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Tottenham, as well as other football clubs, Abdebayor is currently playing in Istanbul Basaksehir after Crystal Palace decided last summer not to renew his contract.
