Los Angeles - 24 September 2017: Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett will undergo surgery on his left knee for the second consecutive year and was placed on season-ending injured reserve, the NFL reported Saturday on its website.

The 26-year-old Verrett, who had an MRI on the surgically repaired knee last week, suffered the latest knee injury in the season opener against the Denver Broncos.

Verrett suffered a season-ending ACL in Week 4 last season.

After surgery to repair the issue, Verrett went through extensive rehab to work his way back onto the field. He was held out of offseason work on the field before slowly increasing his workload during training camp, playing in just one preseason game.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell signed a multi-year contract extension with the Lions in the spring, it was reported Saturday by the NFL’s website.

Caldwell and the Lions had previously declined to discuss the deal. The coach’s original contract with the Lions was set to expire after the season.

Caldwell has been with Detroit since 2014 and taken the team to a pair of playoff appearances.

The announcement comes as the Lions are off to a strong 2-0 start to the season.
