CAIRO - 23 July 2017: Egypt achieved their first win of the Women’s Under-19 (U-19) Basketball World Cup on Sunday by defeating Puerto Rico 69-52 in Italy.

Egypt started the game with the hopes of putting the loss to Russia behind them. They tried to control the game and keep the ball out of the Egyptian court.

El-Shams Club player Miral Abdel Gawad, scored 22 points making her the top scorer. Angelique Rodriguez was the best player from Puerto Rico, she scored 20 points.

Egypt plays in group B alongside Russia, Puerto Rico and Spain. Egypt lost their first match against Russia and they hope to win their last game against Spain.

Italy hosts the 12th edition of the competition. The U.S. has won the most title with seven wins, six of the titles being consecutive. The Soviet Union won the first two tournaments of 1985 and 1989. Australia and Czech Republic have each won one title.

Italy hosts the competition for the first time from July 22 to July 30 in Udine and Cividale del Friuli.
