CAIRO – 9 July 2017: Chelsea’s official website announced the signing of German national defender Antonio Rudiger on July 9.

AS Roma’s former defender was essential in making Roma end in second place last year. He also was crowned champion while playing for the German national team at the 2017 Confederations Cup held in Russia.

Speaking to Chelsea’s website, Rudiger said, “It’s a great feeling, because not every player has the opportunity to join a huge club like this. I am looking forward to meeting up with my new teammates and I’m very proud to officially become a Chelsea player.”

Michael Emenalo, Chelsea’s technical director, said, “We are pleased to be able to bring in a player of proven quality who adds to our defensive options. Antonio is still young, but is experienced at club and international levels and possesses all the requisite attributes to thrive in the Premier League. We have been aware of him for some time, and we are confident he will fit in well with the squad.”

Roma has been selling some of its major players this season and is looking to buy young players who will take part in the future of the club. Mohamed Salah and Antonio Rudiger were two players that left, and Kostas Manolas, Roma’s defender is expected to depart from the club in the next few weeks.
