CAIRO – 21 September 2020: A total of 550 swimmers cooperate Monday to make the largest peace sign in Suez Canal in Ismailia city.

The swimmers are accompanied by Captain Walaa Hafez, the Guinness World Record champion, to mark the International Day of Peace.

“The goal behind marking the International Day of Peace is to convey the idea that Egypt is a country of peace, but at the same time, the country is strong and able to preserve its rights, and stop any enemy that threatens its peace,” said Hafez.

He further explained that the training that took place ahead of the event did not only target physical strength, but also aimed at instilling peace values in the hearts of the participants.

The event is sponsored by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Egyptian Federation for Diving and Rescue, and the Suez Canal Authority.

In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted on a resolution declaring September 21 the International Day of Peace, aiming to abstain the use of violence.

The UN organization published on its official website a reminder that the coronavirus pandemic reminds the peoples of the world that they are not enemies to each other.

The UN indicated that “our enemy is a tireless virus that threatens our health, our security and our livelihoods,” stressing that “the COVID-19 pandemic has plunged our world into a state of turmoil and reminded us that what happens in one part of the earth can affect people everywhere.”
