CAIRO – 22 May 2017: A workshop to evaluate sustainable ecotourism in Siwa was held May 17-18 by the Egyptian-Italian Environmental Cooperation Program (EIECP).

The workshop “Sustainable Ecotourism in Siwa” tackled the current situation of tourism in the oasis, its social, cultural, economic and environmental effects, as well as the means to develop Siwi handicraft.

Participants, who include local officials, some senior sheikhs of different tribes and NGOs, will draft the workshop’s presentations into a worksheet, ordered according to priorities.

Yousria Hamed, head of EIECP, said the project will continue for three years, funded by the Italian Foreign Ministry and executed by the Egyptian Environment Ministry. The Program includes five nature reserves, including Siwa Oasis on the borders with Libya.
