CAIRO – 21 October 2017: As the market for more healthy dairy-free and gluten-free food is growing worldwide, more stores, cafes and restaurants in Egypt are taking on the challenging task of offering healthy yet also delicious and nourishing food.

Driven by a personal experience, where she uncovered the challenge of living a gluten-free life in Egypt, Passand El Hammami decided to start her own market for healthy gluten free baked goods.

“At the age of 27, I got really sick. I discovered that I have had a lot of issues with food and a lot of allergies since my childhood,” Hammami told Egypt Today. “From there, I started looking for medication from wheat, milk, gluten ... and there is no one-time fix; you have to change your lifestyle completely and live on substitutes.”

From there, Hammami decided to do it the right way. She took a course abroad and got certified to make gluten-free goods, and came back to launch “Sea Salt” at the beach in Sahel in 2014. Two years later, the first branch of Sea Salt Bakery and Cafe opened in Zamalek, where everything is gluten-free and allergy friendly.

After tasting the extremely delicious and surprisingly healthy French toast with fresh seasonal fruit and Sea Salt’s famous beetroot hummus and Catalan dips, we had a quick chat with marketer turned baker, Hammami.
