A look back at the Egyptian artistic, cultural scene in 2019 ( Part 1)

CAIRO - 28 December 2019: The cultural and the artistic scene in Egypt was very rich in 2019. Numerous events, festivals, concerts, conferences and seminars took place this year. Before we say goodbye 2019 Egypt Today will give its readers glimpses on what happened this year in the cultural and artistic sector.

1- Cairo Opera House celebrated on June 24 the anniversary of the entry of the Holy Family into the land of Egypt on the stage of Al-Manara Conference Center in the Fifth Settlement. The celebration was attended by Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark Tawadros in addition to a number of ministers and public figures.

2- Egyptian movie “Eyar Nary” (Gunshot) represented Egypt in Tripoli Film Festival’s official competition.

3- Egyptian music band participated in Al-Balad Music Festival in Amman.

4- On June 16, the Gayer-Anderson Museum completed the preparation of explanatory cards using Braille tactile system in to be used in its exhibition halls. This came within the framework of the Ministry of Antiquities’ plan to develop museums and archaeological sites to serve the visually impaired.




5- On June, for the first time, famed Egyptian actress Dina el Sherbiny spoke to the media about her love affair with mega star Amr Diab. Sherbiny said during her interview on "El Hekaya" program that Diab is her biggest personal and professional supporter, announcing that he is over the moon with the success of her latest series "Zay el Shams" ( Like the sun). She further added that he exerted a lot of effort in this series and he generated positive energy to all the series cast.

6- El-Feel el-Azraa’’ (The Blue Elephant) part one was screened on Netflix.

7- On June, Egyptian Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem included 207 Egyptian films in the Egyptian Cinematic archive which houses National cinematic heritage.

8- The Egyptian film “Leil Khargy” (Exterior/ Night) was screen at the first edition of Meknes International Cinema Festival, which kicked off on June 14.

9- Egyptian artist Ahmed el-Badry won the Cairo International Biennale Award, which is worth LE 150,000.

11- The Egyptian film “Ben-Bahrain” (Between two seas) won two awards in the official competition of the Brooklyn Film Festival.

12- After 8 years cut off , Cairo International Biennale was back again to life . Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem inaugurated the 13 Edition of Cairo International Biennale under the slogan "Toward the East" on June 10, in Museum of Modern Egyptian Art and Art Complex in Zamalek and it lasted to August 10.

13- Acclaimed Japanese violinist Ryu Goto participated alongside Maestro Ahmed Saidi, conductor of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, in performances at Cairo Opera House and Alexandria Opera House on June 15 and 17.

14- The ninth edition of Dokki Book fair organized by Microphone Group,was launched from July 4 to July 8.

15- The Legislative Assembly of Ontario approved the celebration of the Egyptian civilization and heritage month in Canada every year in July.

16- On the films official Facebook page, United Bros. Studios posted a 4-minute recap video, featuring the highlights of the first part of ‘’ El Kenz’’ ( The treasure), for the first time in Egypt and the Arab world, following the steps of Hollywood's largest production companies such as Marvel Studios and DC that release recap videos for the previous parts of their film productions.

17- On June 5, prominent comedian Mohamed Negm died on Wednesday at the age of 75 after a battle with illness.

18- The Opera Summer Festival kicked off from June 12 to 20.

19- On June 4, the Musicians Syndicate cancelled its previous decision pertaining to banning famed Egyptian singer Sherine Abdel Wahab from singing.

20- On June 2, the Coptic Museum organised a temporary exhibition under the title "Holy Journey" on the occasion of the anniversary of the arrival of the Holy family to Egypt.

21- Famed Syrian singer Faia Younan sang for the first time in the Bedouin dialect in her new song "Kholhalha" (Her Anklet).

22- Numerous film screenings were held on the Vision Forum for Youth Cinema's third edition held by the National Center for Cinema on May 26.

23- On May, the National Media Authority announced signing a protocol, allowing video streaming app Watch iT to commercialize the archives of the Egyptian television.

24- Google celebrated on Sunday, May 26 the discovery of the Khufu ship in 1954 with a Google Doodle.

26- American star Will Smith congratulated the Arab and Islamic nations on the advent of the holy month of Ramadan on his official Instagram account.

27- The Egyptian Embassy in Berlin launched a cultural blog to preserve and digitalize the Egyptian heritage.

28- On May 7 veteran actress Mohsena Tawfik passed away at 80.

29- On the occasion of Africa Day, the Egyptian Cultural Center in Paris held a puppet show at the UNESCO headquarters on May 25.

30- Ambassador of Egypt in Rome Hisham Badr inaugurated a fine arts exhibition entitled "Colors of Egypt" in Rome under the auspices of cultural attaché Hajar Seif el-Nasr and in the presence of a number of Egyptian and foreign diplomats.The exhibition presents the works of four Egyptian artists: Farida Darwish, Dina Fahmy, Farida al-Koni and Rasha Ghaleb.

31- Music distributor Islam Chipsy participated in the opening of Kunsten Festival Des Arts' 24th edition, hosted by the Belgian capital Brussels on May 10.

32- Christie’s hosted a panel discussion on Egypt’s Creative Journey: Ancient, Modern and Contemporary, featuring Nadine Abdel Ghaffar, founder of Art D’Egypte; Omniya el Barr, researcher at the V&A; and Ramzy Dalloul, collector and founder of Dalloul Art Foundation. Supported by the British Council, on Tuesday, May 7, at Christie’s, King Street, London.

33- The founder of MAAT for Contemporary Art, the outstanding dancer, choreographer and dance educator Karima Mansour has been selected by the Executive Council of the International Theater Institute ITI, in partnership with the ITI dance committee and the World Dance Alliance, to write the International Dance Day message for 2019.

34- Famed Egyptian/American actor Sayed Badreya ‘co-stars megastar Jackie Chan in ’Vanguard’’ movie. The film will be premiered in 2020.

35- The 54th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) honoured late great Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine. The festival was held between June 28 and July 6 in Karlovy Vary in Czech Republic.

36- Egyptian actress Yasmine Sabri was named Ambassador of African Women on Tuesday, April 23 during the Arab African Conference on Women's Empowerment in the presence of ministers and dignitaries from across the Arab region and the African continent.

37- A huge parade was hosted in Al-Muizz Street on April 21, as part of the International Festival of Drums and Traditional Arts' seventh edition.
