CAIRO – 26 March 2018:Animated fantasy-drama film "The Breadwinner" will screen at Magnolia. Leaves of Art on Monday.

The film comes from first time director, Nora Twomey, who has previously worked on other animated films such as “The Secret of Kells” with Angelina Jolie. Twomey worked as an executive producer for the film, “The Secret of Kells.” The film explores the harshness of life for women in contemporary Afghanistan, and how one young girl overcomes her circumstances.

"The Breadwinner" is based on a young-adult novel of the same name, published in 2000, by author Deborah Ellis. The film’s heroine is a young girl called Parvana, played by Sara Chaudry, who faces the task of becoming her family's primary caretaker following the kidnapping of her father by Taliban.

Faced with dire circumstances under such an oppressive regime, Parvana discovers relief through her imagination; she concocts a story about a young boy standing up against the cruel Elephant King, and it is through this narrative that she begins to draw on her own inner-strength.A chance encounter leads her to assume an identity that allows her to conduct a search for her missing father.

Released on November 17, 2017, "The Breadwinner" was nominated for the Oscar Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
