CAIRO – 21 April 2017: A monument to Russian classical poet and writer Alexander Pushkin (1799–1837) was unveiled in downtown Cairo on Thursday, according to a statement by the Russian Cultural Centre in Cairo.

A special gala took place at Al-Hurriuah Park, in front of the Cairo Opera House in the upscale district of Zamalek in downtown.

The celebration was attended by Russian Ambassador to Egypt, Sergei Kirpichenko; Director of Cultural Activities at the Russian Cultural Centre, Sherif Gad; and a number of cultural officials and students of Russian language faculties at Cairo University and Ain Shams University.

Pushkin, Russia's most revered poet, inspired the tradition of Russian music as well as the Russian opera through his astounding writings.

The statue marks the diamond jubilee of the Russian Cultural Centre.
