CAIRO – 21 October 2017: October 21 marks the 29th anniversary of the coming-of-age drama film Mystic Pizza, which starred a young Julia Roberts, and proved to be the start of a very successful career for her.

Directed by Donald Petrie, the film is set in Mystic, Connecticut, and follows Daisy Arujo (Roberts) , a young woman working at her family restaurant alongside her sisters, Jojo (Lili Taylor) and Kat (Annabeth Gish) as they deal with problems both in their career and with their personal lives, including typical teenage woes such as love and school.

Daisy attracts the attention of a rich handsome bachelor while Kat falls for a married architect, and Jojo starts getting cold feet regarding her upcoming wedding. As they juggle their love lives and work, the three sisters hope to boost the popularity of their store by attracting the attention of a prestigious food reviewer.

The film made double its budget of $6 million and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature in 1989, while Roberts was nominated for Best Female Lead award. Two years later, she would star in Pretty Woman, the film that turned her into a superstar, and it’s all thanks to her humble start at Mystic Pizza.
