CAIRO – 19 October 2017: On October 19, 1985, MTV would help propel the Norwegian Band a-Ha’s song “Take on Me” to the #1 spot on Billboard’s pop chart.
Founded in 1982, the a-Ha’s were a success in the UK, with two of their songs topping the charts over there, even though they failed to achieve any attention overseas. Enter MTV, who aired a unique, experimental music video for the song that featured lead singer Morten Harket, combining animation and reality through the technique of rotoscoping to bring to life the romantic story of a woman who falls in love with a handsome comic book hero, leaving his comic book to enter our world and be with her.
Not only was the music video a massive success in the charts, but it holds an unbroken record of eight consecutive wins at the MTV Music Awards in 1986. Though a-Ha never managed to repeat the success of “Take on Me,” the song remains as one of the 80s most unique and memorable showings.
