CAIRO – 27 September 2017: September 27 marks the day opera tenor singer Placido Domingo broke the opening-night record of the legendary Enrico Caruso in 1999.

Domingo managed to hold 18 consecutive opening-nights at the Metropolitan Opera House, one more than Caruso’s record of 17 years, which no one had managed to even approach for the 60 years since Caruso’ death in 1921. Domingo didn’t even realize how close he was to breaking the record until his 11th opening night, something he could have never anticipated.

Having sung in every major opera house around the world, Domingo has made a name for himself as one of the greatest living tenor singers, and has sung over 148 different roles across his decades long career with almost 4,000 performances since he first sung in 1971.

As recognition for his immense talent, Domingo has won 12 Grammy Awards, and most famously performed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics closing ceremony, to an audience of around two billion viewers.
