4 documentaries about artists – No.3: Ai Weiwei Never Sorry

CAIRO- 29 August 2017: This film is about the esteemed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who attracted international attention through his humanitarian activism as well as his bold condemnation of the Chinese government.



Weiwei started to get famous as one of the artists who designed the "bird nest" stadium in Beijing that hosted the 2008 Olympics. But when he found that poor Chinese people were kicked out of their houses in order for this project to be implemented, he became an opponent of it. His activism rose in the aftermath of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, which resulted in over 80,000 casualties, among which were many children who stayed inside poor school buildings.

This 2013 documentary is the debut film of the Beijing-based journalist and filmmaker Alison Klayman and has earned a number of awards. Between 2008 and 2010 she gained first-time access to the artist and documented Weiwei's preparation for exhibitions at major museums, as well as his personal relationship with family members.
