Acquaint yourself with ancient Egypt’s ‘Mehyt' sign

CAIRO – 28 September 2022: The ancient Egyptian ‘Mehyt' sign represents a clump of three papyrus stems with buds on its sides bending downward.

It is pronounced “Mehyt”, meaning the north or the delta, due to the papyrus’ association with northern Egypt.

It was used in other words such as “Idhu” meaning swamp, and “Mehu” meaning Land of the Papyrus. 

The papyrus was also a symbol of life. Here, queen Ankhesenamun is offering papyrus and lotus flowers to Tutankhamun.
