CAIRO – 4 September 2022: A home renovation in northern England has revealed a rare set of gold coins that could be worth up to £250,000 when they are auctioned next month.

The find is one of the largest hoards of 18th-century English gold coins unearthed in Britain, according to Spink & Son auctions, according to CNN.

While renovating their kitchen in July 2019, residents of a North England home discovered a porcelain mug under the concrete and floorboards of their home in Ellerby, North Yorkshire.

The chalice, which was described as no larger than a can of soft drink, contained more than 260 gold coins dating from 1610 to 1727. The coin stock is valued at thousands of dollars, auctioneers said.

Gregory Edmund, auctioneer at Spink & Son, said this remarkable collection is unlike any find in British archaeology or any coin auction in living memory. "It's a really amazing and unexpected discovery," Edmund said in a press release reported by CNN.

"This discovery of more than 260 coins is also one of the largest archaeological finds from Britain devoted to coins that certainly date back to the eighteenth century period," resumed Edmund.
