1249 - Damietta falls to Louis IX, King of France and leader of the Crusader forces participating in the Seventh Crusade.

 

 

 

 

1487 - The Portuguese Bartholomew Diaz, with the help of the Arab traveler Ibn Majid, discovered the Cape of Good Hope while returning from India, along the African coast.

 

 

 

 

1967 - Israel attacks Egypt, Syria and Jordan in what is known as the Six-Day War.

 

 

 

 

1975 - Egypt reopens the Suez Canal again after the Israelis were evacuated from it, with the crossing of the first ship in eight years. President Mohamed Anwar Sadat was on board the ship.

 

 

 

 

1981 - The onset of HIV/AIDS.
