CAIRO – 9 March 2022: Egypt celebrates Martyr's Day on March 9 every year in recognition of our righteous martyrs.

The day is originally held in the memory of Lieutenant General Abdel Moneim Riyad's martyrdom in 1969, when he went to the front on the second day of the War of Attrition to personally follow up on the results of the previous day’s battle and to be among his armed forces' colleagues in such a violent and continuous combat to exhaust the enemy.

While passing on the forces on the front lines north of Ismailia, Riyad was fatally wounded by enemy artillery fire during the clash, and died during his transfer to Ismailia Hospital. The people of all denominations came out during his funeral to bid him farewell, with reverence, respect and deep sadness.

“I Am from Every Egyptian House.” Under this slogan, Egypt’s armed forces launched the celebration of Martyr’s Day on the 53rd anniversary of the martyrdom of Lieutenant-General Abdel Moneim Riyad, indicating that the martyrs are heroes found in most of the Egyptian families coming from the good sprouts of this land.

The design of the slogan consists of the flag of Egypt and the shadow of the heroes who sacrifice their lives for the homeland, its peace and security.  A white pigeon flying in the sky of the homeland was used.
