Egypt’s Arab Poetry House to host “Poets of Umm Kulthum & Abdel Wahab” symposium on Feb. 27

CAIRO – 27 February 2022: On February 27 at 6 p.m., Egypt’s Arab Poetry House will hold an symposium entitled "Poets of Umm Kulthum & Abdel Wahab"

 

 

 

 

The evening comes on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the “Musician of Generations” Mohamed Abdel Wahab on March 13, 1889, as well as the death anniversary of the “Planet of the East” Umm Kulthum, who passed away on February 3, 1975.

 

 

 

 

Mohamed Abdel Wahab excelled as a musical and lyrical composer, and film actor. He began his artistic career as a singer in the Fawzi Al-Jazairli band in 1917. In 1920, he studied the oud at the Institute of Arabic Music. He began working in radio in 1934 and in cinema in 1933. Abdel Wahab was strongly associated with the “Prince of Poets” Ahmed Shawky and composed many songs for him.

 

 

 

 

Abdel Wahab also composed for several singers in Egypt and the Arab world, namely Fairuz, Umm Kulthum, Laila Murad, Abdel Halim Hafez, Nagat al-Saghira, Fayza Ahmed, Warda al-Jazaeryah, Sabah, Talal Maddah and Asmahan.
