1839 - The Opium War begins, declared by the United Kingdom against China.

 

 

 

1903 - Panama becomes independent.

 

 

 

1957 - Laika the dog is launched into space by the Soviet ship Sputnik-2 to be the first living creature to be launched into space.

 

 

 

1992 - Bill Clinton is elected President of the United States after defeating President George W. Bush.

 

 

 

2004 - The Federal Supreme Council elects Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, as President of the United Arab Emirates, succeeding his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

 

 

 

2014 - The One World Trade Center opens, becoming the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, with a height of 541 meters.
