Inspired by Mohammad Ramadan, Middle East comedian Superstar Deya Elayyan drops hilarious new single ‘Super Basha’
What do you do when you’ve starred in several hit comedy series across the Middle East, sell-out stand-up gigs and have a social media following of nearly four million?
Well, if you’re Deya Elayyan a Chicago-born, Jordan-raised proud Palestinian comedian, you follow your dreams.
Raised on a diet of non-stop music including rap, Deya has always wanted to bring music into his show. But he had to find the right mix of music, vibe and lyrics to really make it work alongside his comedian stage persona.
Inspired by the laugh-out-loud music-meets-comedy of Mohammad Ramadan, Deya has been working hard behind the scenes to make his dreams come true. And the end result is the playful bounce of ‘Super Basha.’
As Deya explains, there is a lot of cross-over between comedy and music in his world. Especially when you’re a larger-than-life comic with an encyclopedic knowledge of rap music.
‘Honestly there is a lot of cross-over, the music I'm doing compliments my personality as a comedian. As you can see and hear in the video, it's based on danceable and funky grooves combined with funny lyrics, so both comedy and music, in this case, go hand in hand.’
And ‘Super Basha’ with its brilliantly over-the-top acting and comic lines, is just the start of his new career in music.
Deya is currently hard at work in Egypt collaborating with the region’s best writers and producers, with more singles to come later this year and early in 2022.
Looking further ahead, Deya would love to collaborate with Mohammad Ramadan and several artists in the Algerian and Moroccan rap scene.
The end goal, says Deya, is to combine his music and comedy into one show.
‘Eventually, my shows will be a celebration of feel-good comedy and music.’
