CAIRO - 22 June 2021: Palestinian writer and director Najwa Najjar will be honored at the fifth round of Aswan International Women Film Festival running from June 24- June 29.

Najjar will be honored for being an iconic role model of this generation of filmmakers and creatives in cinema in the Arab world.

Having obtained her degrees in film production from the United States of America, she founded the Ustura Film Company in Palestine in the year 2000.

She started her cinematic career in documentary and short narrative films, participating in international festivals, until  her first feature film “Pomegranates and Myrrh” in 2009.

She then won Best Director for her second “Eyes of the Thief” (2014) at the Calcutta Film Festival, with the film also winning the Silver Pyramid Award for Best Actor, being nominated at the Golden Globes and getting her nominated to represent Palestine for the Foreign Language Film Award category at the 2015 Academy Awards Oscars.

Najjar’s success lived on as her film “Between Heaven and Earth” (2019) won the Naguib Mahfouz Award for Best Screenplay at CIFF, was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Award at the Golden Globes and the European Film Academy, winning many awards. Just last year, 2020, Najjar was chosen to be part of the Oscars’ board, elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Writer’s Division).
