CAIRO - 17 January 2021: Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Hala El-Saeed approved Saturday LE 78.7 million for the Lake Mariout purification project in Alexandria governorate as part of the current fiscal year 2020/21 plan.

El-Saeed explained that the cost of the Lake Mariout rehabilitation project amounted to about LE 236.250 million, divided into three tranches, as the first and second tranches were approved during the year 2020.

She added that the project to purify Lake Mariout, south of Alexandria, is one of the integrated development projects that the governorate has witnessed.

"The project comes in the implementation of the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, as he stressed the need for these lakes to return to their previous status. This comes as part of the country's strategy to rehabilitate the northern lakes, in which Lake Mariout has been witnessing development work to deepen and raise the water level in the lake for several years," she explained.

The minister added that the volume of water in the lake reached 5 million cubic meters after the project, and sewage operations were implemented in the lake, as well as stopping breaches on it.
