CAIRO - 11 August 2020: Communications Minister Amr Talaat said that Egypt has taken great steps as regards implementing its national strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI).


Talaat was speaking during the opening session of the Virtual Regional Consultation Meeting for the Arab States Region on the first draft of the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The two-day event is co-organized by the UNESCO and the Egyptian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT).
 

Talaat said his ministry has started implementing an ambitious capacity-building program to enable all segments of society to be aware of the AI technologies, adding that a comprehensive program will be launched for all civil servants to educate them about the AI uses.
 

Egypt has established the Applied Innovation Center (AIC) with the aim of implementing several artificial intellegenc projects, Talaat added. 
 

He reviewed Egypt’s efforts to make the best use of the AI technologies, highlighting the establishing of the National Artificial Intelligence Council which is tasked with implementing the national strategy of artificial intelligence at all sectors.
 

A new law on personal data protection has been issued, he underlined. 
 

An Ad Hoc Expert Group (AHEG) composed of 24 international experts appointed by the Director-General of UNESCO, prepared a first draft of the Recommendation on the Ethics of AI in May 2020.
 

The Ad Hoc Expert Group of UNESCO will then review the results of these consultations in September 2020 and produce a final draft text of the Recommendation.
