CAIRO - 6 February 2018: Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker had talks on Tuesday with representatives from a number of Italian companies operating in the energy and environment domains to lure investments to Egypt.

Italian Ambassador in Cairo Giampaolo Cantini attended the meeting, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Shaker reviewed the efforts exerted by the ministry to confront the challenges facing the electricity sector, noting that the ministry is cooperating with an international think tank to lay down a strategy to magnify renewable energy's contribution to exceed 37 percent by 2035.

He added that all needed measures were taken to set up the first power plant in the Middle East to generate electricity from water stations using pumping and storage technology.

The 2400-megawatt-capacity plant will be located in Attaqa Mountain, the minister said.

He added that a number of agreements were signed to establish a solar energy farm within the framework of economic reforms in Egypt which aims mainly at improving the services offered to citizens.

Cantini underlined his country's interest in investing in Egypt and contributing to renewable energy projects .
