Egypt’s Min. of Int’l cooperation discusses ways to enhance joint economic cooperation with Yemeni counterpart

CAIRO – 12 October 2021: Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation Rania A. Al-Mashat met with Yemen’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Waed Bathib, on his visit to Cairo as part of the high-level delegation headed by Yemen’s Prime Minister, Maeen Abdulmalik.

 During the meeting, both sides discussed joint economic relations between Egypt and Yemen, and addressed means of developing bilateral relations between both countries across various fields.

Minister Al-Mashat stated that this meeting comes within the framework of the Government of Egypt’s efforts to enhance joint economic relations with Arab countries; adding that this is a continuation of the discussions held with the Egyptian and Yemeni governments, headed by prime ministers of both countries.

She further affirmed Egypt’s keenness and readiness to provide support to the Government of Yemen, especially in qualifying and training Yemeni cadres across various fields; noting that this comes in light of the strengthened historical relation between Egypt and Yemen. The Minister emphasized the Egyptian government's keenness on deepening cooperation between both countries and on supporting Yemen to overcome any challenges.

Al-Mashat referred to the extensive Egyptian expertise and the deepened relations with bilateral and multilateral development partners, which has resulted in the achievement of several success stories within supporting development projects and underpinning Egypt’s efforts in advancing various sectors. H.E. added that this comes within the framework of the Ministry of International Cooperation’s role in strengthening ties with international institutions and development partners; in alignment with the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Moreover, Minister Al-Mashat elaborated that Egypt has strong relations with several multilateral development partners, including the World Bank Group (WBG), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This is in addition to the profound ties with bilateral development partners, such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Korean International Cooperation Agency. H.E. expressed that these partnerships result in ambitious strategies that align with the country’s development efforts, and play a role in advancing the private sector’s engagement. 

The Minister noted that the Ministry of International Cooperation is ready to transfer knowledge and expertise with the brotherly Yemen, to support its efforts in restoring stability and achieving development.

For his part, Yemen’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, H.E. Waed Bathib expressed his contentment for the Prime Minister’s visit to Egypt, and his gratitude for being among the delegation accompanying H.E. Abdulmalik; noting that this opens more the room for more discussions on common files between both countries.

Bathib added that he looks forward to establishing strengthened and enhanced partnerships that boosts the hopes of the Government of Yemen so as to push forward development. In addition, he expressed his aspiration to benefit from Egypt's expertise in the field of development cooperation and relations with development partners.

The Ministry of International Cooperation is working to strengthen economic cooperation relations with Arab countries through joint higher committees, which come in light of the Ministry’s principles of Economic Diplomacy. In the same vein, a number of joint higher committees were held in 2020 and 2021 with Jordan, Iraq, South Sudan, and Libya.
