CAIRO – 8 March 2021: Headed by Senate Speaker Abdel Wahab Abdel Razek, the first session of the reinstated Senate after the inaugural session was concluded on Monday, after officers of its 14 specialized committees were elected.

Heads and deputy heads of the committees were elected in the first session.

The committees included the legislative and constitutional committee, the financial committee, the defense committee, the foreign affairs committee, the trade and industry committee, the energy, and the environment and labor committee.

It also included the housing and transport committee, the education and scientific research committee, the communication and information technology committee, the sports committee, the health committee, and the agriculture committee.

Among the committees are also the human rights committee, the culture and tourism committee and the religious affairs committee.

Egypt has not had this council since 2013, then called the Shura Council. It was dissolved after the January 25 Revolution in 2011, and again in June 2013 after an election that the Constitutional Court had found unconstitutional.

The reinstatement of the Senate was one of the newly-suggested amendments to the Constitution in 2019.
