Sisi approves Egypt’s Senate internal regulation

 

CAIRO - 4 March 2021: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi approved Law No 2 of 2021 on the internal regulations of the  Egyptian Senate (the upper house of the parliament).

 

With publishing the law in the official gazette Al-Waqa'i' al-Misriyya on Thursday, the law will be applicable on the following day.

 

The Senate’s inaugural session convened on October 18, 2020. Egypt has not had this council since 2013, then called the Shura Council. It was dissolved after the January 25 Revolution in 2011, and again in June 2013 after an election that the Constitutional Court had found unconstitutional.

 

On October 20, 2020, President Sisi appointed 100 members out of 300 at the Senate in a fashion that guarantees diversity in the council. The 100 appointed members include eight heads of different parties.

 

He also issued a presidential decree to appoint 20 women in the Egyptian Senate, doubling the women quota in the parliamentary formation.

 

 As per Article 24 of Law No. 141 of 2020 for the Senate, the president has the right to allocate at least 10 percent of 100 appointed members for women.
