Haya Karima social initiative expanded to improve lives in hundreds of rural settlements

CAIRO – 24 February 2021: More than 95 percent of the targets of the first phase of Haya Karima initiative has been accomplished in 143 villages, head of the project, Mohamed Abdel Fattah, said Wednesday.

The remaining four percent are related to encroachments of houses built outside the legal urban space, Abdel Fattah told Al-Yawm show on DMC channel.

The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Solidarity with the participation of the Ministry of Local Development and the Ministry of Planning, receives significant support from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Hence, phase two has been launched with more interventions to improve the lives of citizens in all their stages, Abdel Fattah added.

The services in the initiative include healthcare for the most in need, free prosthetics, social protection for those with special needs, and interventions to enhance economic representations and family and child services.

The results of the first phase include developing 375 medium rural settlements with a poverty level of 76%, with a total of 5.4 million beneficiaries and L.E. 13.5 billion in investments. A total of 143 rural settlements have been developed at L.E. 4 billion in 2020, and 232 rural settlements at L.E. 9.6 billion in 2021.

The initiative has been expanded in its second phase to include 20 governorates and 51 markaz (an administrative subdivision that is smaller than a governorate and a city but larger than a village).

Main Outputs of Developing 375 rural settlement by the End of 2021

Drinking Water: Improving accessibility to drinking water in 361 rural settlements

Healthcare: 113 healthcare units serving more than 1.4 million citizens

Education: 2,950 new classrooms accommodating more than 117,000 pupils.

Sanitation: 170 rural settlements given sanitation at 16%

Roads: 222 rural settlements connected to the developed road network over 324 kilometers

Electricity: Improving the power grid and lighting services in 268 rural settlements.
