CAIRO - 10 February 2020: Cairo Tower lit up in sparkling red to celebrate the arrival of the United Arab Emirates' Hope Probe to Mars on Tuesday.

It should be noted that the UAE is the first Arab country and the fifth country in history to reach Mars.

“204 days and more than 480 million kms later, the #HopeProbe is now in the Capture Orbit of #Mars,” the official Twitter account of the Hope Mars Mission tweeted shortly afterward, with the hashtag #ArabsToMars.

This makes the UAE only the second country to ever successfully enter Mars’ orbit on its first try, despite attempts being made since the 1960s. The only other country to have done so is India.

Earlier, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi hailed the arrival of the UAE's spacecraft to the "red planet", calling this an unprecedented step in scientific research, as it heralds a major scientific boom in the Arab region.

He greeted the UAE leadership and people for the successful scientific experience that aims to explore new horizons in space.
