CAIRO – 27 January 2020: On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry delivered a speech at the high-level conference to mobilize financing for the Peace-building Fund via video conference. This comes within the framework of Egypt's interest in the fund's role as one of the pillars of the United Nations peace-building architecture.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Hafez, stated that Minister Shoukry welcomed in his speech the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to mobilize political and financial support for the Peace-building Fund.

In this regard, Shoukry referred to Egypt's support for what was recommended by the "Secretary-General of the Peace-building Fund for the period 2020-2024,"which includes a vision for how the fund's activities and resources will be best used in the coming years, especially in light of the political, economic and social repercussions resulting from the outbreak of the Corona epidemic, which pose a tremendous challenge to international peace and security due to its dangerous impact in exacerbating the conditions that cause conflict and weakening state institutions.

Hafez added that the Foreign Minister discussed the need to consider relying on innovative financial sources to finance the fund and avoid relying on financial donations only, in addition to the importance of continuing to launch and implement initiatives to improve cooperation with donors to build peace.
