CAIRO – 21 January 2021: A father was arrested and detained for four days pending investigation for trying to murder his 14-month toddler after he stripped her off clothes in the street to burn her.

A video went viral on social media on January 19, 2021, showing how the father was stripping the daughter and trying to spill fuel on her body to burn her, while the crying toddler was crawling in mud amid very cold temperature. Few seconds, a neighbor rushed towards the baby and lifted her from the ground to protect her.

Immediately, the police arrested the father, a mechanic, in Nabaroh city of Dakahlia [Egypt’s Delta] upon a request from Egypt’s Attorney General Hamada Al-Sawy, accusing him of “murdering attempt.” However, he said in the investigations that the baby is not his daughter and he doubts that his wife has affairs with someone else.

The father said that he married nearly two years ago and was doubting his wife's behavior, adding that after less than a month of their marriage, she became pregnant and he asked her to get rid of this pregnancy. However, as he said, she refused his request and gave birth to the child.

"I didn’t mean to kill Sayyeda [the daughter]. I wanted to fear Amal [the wife] and her father because they wanted to give my name to the girl. She is not my daughter,” he said.

However, the wife denied the husband's accusations and accused him of torturing her and the child, asking for conducting a DNA test to prove that the child is his daughter.
