CAIRO - 9 January 2020: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) revealed that direct meetings would be held for members of the Advisory Committee of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Geneva next week.

The Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-general in Libya, Stephanie Williams, held the second virtual meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum on Jan. 6, during which many proposals related to the mechanism for selecting members were reviewed, in addition to the nomination procedures for the body were discussed by the members of the committee.

Williams expressed appreciation for the positive and participatory atmosphere that prevailed in the discussions, emphasizing the urgent need to get out of the current political deadlock and accelerate the process of unifying the executive authority.

On Jan. 3, members of the Libyan Dialogue Forum called on the United Nations Security Council to prevent all forms of foreign armed presence and expel mercenaries and foreign bases from Libya.

The members referred to the negative effects of various forms of foreign interference in Libya's affairs, which led to the flow of weapons and mercenaries into the country in violation of international resolutions.

They also stressed the need for the participation of Senates and Sheikhs in all electoral districts under the auspices and assistance of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), demanding support, encouragement, and adoption of the outcomes of the Libyan political dialogue to reach constitutional legitimacy through the completion of specific presidential and parliamentary elections.

Libya has been in chaos ever since the 2011 overthrow and killing of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in a NATO-backed uprising, with warring rival administrations battling for power. Since the downfall of Kadhafi, Libya also has become a key route for irregular migration from Africa into Europe, across the Mediterranean Sea.
