CAIRO – 5 January 2021: In few days, the Egyptian Railway Authority (ERA) will begin installing 300 turnstile gates in main stations located in Cairo, Giza, and Alexandria in order to inhibit passengers from boarding without purchasing tickets.

The current value of fines for boarding without a ticket is LE50 for new Russian trains; LE40 for VIP trains; LE30 for air-conditioned, Spanish, and French trains; LE20 for third-class in renovated and premium trains; and LE10 for trains that stop in towns. All fines are collected on the spot.

The Egyptian authorities began on Sunday applying a LE50-fine on people who fail to wear a mask while riding public transportation or in closed spaces.

The police as well as those who have citizen’s arrest powers, mainly at government institutions, can apply the fine, even if a person has a mask on him but does not wear it. If he fails to pay the fine, he will be referred to the prosecution.

The police were seen on streets Sunday checking that drivers and passengers in public transportation vehicles wear the mask. Pedestrians and those in private vehicles are exempt from the fine.
