CAIRO – 10 December 2020: The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources invited tenders Wednesday to select a company that builds New Deirut Barrages in Asyut.

The project is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with $57 billion and is aimed at serving the governorates of Upper Egypt.

The current Deirut Barrages are located on Al Ibrahimeya Canal and were built 148 years ago. It encompasses five barrages that serve seven canals in Asyut, Menya, Beni Suef, Fayoum, and Giza providing 9.6 billion cubic meters of irrigation water to 1.67 million feddans.

The loan agreement between the ministry and JICA was signed in March 2015, and consists of financing the design and construction works. The project is planned to be accomplished in 2024.
