In Pics: Egyptians flock to polling stations to take part in House runoff

CAIRO – 23 November 2020: Citizens flocked to polling stations since the early morning, Monday in several governorates around Egypt to cast their ballots in the House runoff election.

Women lined up at the stations and were seen participating heavily in the election process, especially in Qena governorate located Upper Egypt and Beheira.

Anti-Covid-19 precautions which was strictly followed amid the elections including social distancing, wearing masks and using alcohol.

Intensive security measures were also seen around polling stations to protect the runoff election, as a comprehensive security plan was announced to be adopted to secure citizens while casting their ballots during the electoral process.

Egypt’s House runoff election kicked off Monday in 13 governorates, including, the New Valley, Fayyoum, Beni Sweif, Minya, Assiut, Behaira, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria and Matrouh.

Two hundred and twenty candidates are competing over 110 seats at the lower house of parliament.

Voters are expected to cast their ballots for two following days in the governorates of Giza, the New Valley, Fayyoum, Beni Sweif, Minya, Assiut, Behaira, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria and Matrouh.

Egypt Interior Ministry intensified its security measures to secure the run-off House elections which kicked off, Monday.

The Ministry adopted a comprehensive security plan to secure citizens while casting their ballots during the electoral process, according to officel statement.

The measures included traffic services to facilitate the voters' access to the electoral commissions, along with surrounding the polling stations with security troops.

The runoff voting in the first phase of House of Representatives polls kicked off Monday in 13 governorates.

Voters are expected to cast their ballots for two following days in the governorates of Giza, the New Valley, Fayyoum, Beni Sweif, Minya, Assiut, Behaira, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria and Matrouh.

The turnout for the first round of the polls was 28.6 percent.

The second phase was conducted on November 7 and 8 at a total of 9,468 polling stations in 13 governorates.

As per the NEA data, a total of 31 million Egyptians were eligible to cast their votes in the 13 governorates, namely: Cairo, Qalioubiya, Daqahliya, Menoufiya, Gharbiya, Kafr Al-Sheikh, Sharqiya, Damietta, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, North Sinai and South Sinai.

The final results of Egypt’s House elections to be formally announced by the National Elections Authority on December 14.

The first phase of the election was held for Egyptian expats abroad from 21 to 23 October and locally from 24 to 25 October.  National Elections Authority held a press conference to announce the results of the first round of the first phase of voting in 2020 House of Representatives Elections.

The NEA's Chairman Lashin Ibrahim stated that the turnout in the 14 governorates included in the first phase is 28.06 percent as almost nine million out of 31 million eligible citizens voted.

Regarding lists, the National List for Egypt won in the electoral districts of Upper Egypt (composed of 11 governorates) and Western Delta (composed of three governorates) securing 100 seats in the former and 42 in the latter. It was competing against the Egypt's Call List.

According to the updated voters' database by the National Election Authority, a total of 63 million Egyptians are eligible to cast their votes in the two phases of the parliament election.
